A balanced diet is a diet that contains the proper proportions of all nutrients; carbohydrate, fat, protein, vitamin, mineral, and water which are all necessary to maintain good health while a healthy diet is one that helps to maintain or improve overall health. A healthy diet supports energy needs and provides all essential nutrients without exposure to toxicity or excessive weight gain from consuming excessive amounts.
A healthy diet must be balanced but a balanced diet is not necessarily healthy. For example: A meal consisting of meat pie and carbonated soft drink will supply carbohydrates, protein, some vitamins and minerals but at the same time release substances such as refined sugar, caffeine and excess sodium which are harmful in large amounts. Such a meal is not healthy even though it is balanced. On the other hand, if someone spends the same amount of money to buy local rice and beans as well as fish, the meal will supply carbohydrates, protein, fat as well as some vitamins and minerals without releasing harmful substances such as refined sugar and caffeine.
