Effect of Refined Grains on Body Weight

Refined grains such as biscuits, pastries, white bread and white rice contain little fibre, are easily digested and absorbed. Therefore, they do not support weight loss; rather they aid gain weight.

If you are trying to lose weight, you should avoid or eat such foods in moderation like any other processed food. It is better to eat bread made from whole wheat than the one made from refined flour. Moreover, you should watch what you eat with it: what is eaten with the bread may be responsible for fattening more than the bread itself e.g. butter, fried egg etc.

Many people have formed the habit of eating rice or refined corn more than once a day, almost every day of the week. This will not afford them the opportunity to consume enough of fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts to obtain adequate fibre for weight loss.

Refined grains are also acid-forming and therefore should be properly combined with other foods. If foods that form acidic residue are combined with alkaline-forming foods, the effect on health over time is not good. Some people even experience immediate negative effects such as abdominal pain.

I struggled with abdominal pain for several years until I knew about food combination. Since then I’ve been avoiding combining alkaline-forming with acid-forming foods on the same plate or eating them less than three hours apart.

Learn to eat grains the way nature has designed it to be eaten i.e. with its bran and you will be consuming a heart-healthy, fibre rich food which is good for your digestive health.

Those who suffer from digestive disorders such as constipation, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers and others should avoid or eat bread and other products of refined wheat in moderation.
