Diet and Nutrition
Nutrition is the science of interaction of nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism. It includes food intake, absorption, assimilation, biosynthesis, catabolism and excretion.
In nutrition, diet is the combination of food eaten habitually. The food groups include water, fruits and vegetables, roots and tubers, grains, legumes, eggs, nuts, milk and dairy products, fats and oil, fish, meat and meat products. Sweeteners, beverages and supplements though not considered as food groups; can cause ill-health if taken in excess; therefore, it is important to know basic things about them.
The word diet is often colloquially used to mean weight-management. It is important to know that dietary habits and choices play a significant role in the quality of life, health and longevity. Individual dietary choices may be more or less healthy compared to others.
Specific weight loss programs especially the ones tagged as ‘dieting’ can be harmful to health, while others may be beneficial and therefore referred to as healthy Diet. “Healthy diet” provides the body with the right balance of vitamins, minerals, other nutrients, promotes healthy weight management and prevents health problems. A healthy diet includes preparation of food and storage methods that preserve nutrients from oxidation, heat or leaching, and that reduce risk of foodborne illness
Everyone can be affected by inadequate nutrition but moms and young children are at highest risk of malnutrition hence ill-health and death. Approximately 7.5 million children under the age of 5 die from malnutrition, and it is usually brought on by not having the money to find or make food. Pro-healthy living seeks to educate people especially mums on how they can obtain nutritious foods even within a lean budget and feed their children very well.
