Can a baby be malnourished in the womb?
Yes, a baby can be malnourished in the womb. Mothers and babies form an inseparable biological and social unit; the health and nutrition of one cannot be divorced from the health and nutrition of the other. If a mother is malnourished, the baby is likely to be malnourished. This can lead to problems even right there in the womb before the baby is born. For example, a lack of iron in a pregnant woman causes anaemia, increases the risk of infants’ death while the lack of folic acid can cause severe birth defects.
